Troy Kilgore

Troy Kilgore has lived in Bloomington, Indiana for over 35 years. He paints in a representational manner, but with a brevity focused on design and color. He studies outside "en plein air" all year round. He says, “Some studies I make larger in my studio, others are left as they are because I feel I cannot improve upon them or because they are better smaller and more intimate.” 

When he stops to paint, it is usually because of the light and not necessarily because of the thing or place. He tries to depict strong light and shadow and  attributes any success in this arena not only to years of experience, but also to his use of a split primary palette composed of both warm and cool colors. Kilgore says, “I believe in the importance of good drawing skills. Even when I paint loose and abstractly, I still want to convey each scene with authenticity and realism.”
