Lake Sunset, pastel on monotype by Donna Shortt (image 12x16" framed to 18x24")

About this process: Monotype is a print but with one major difference from other printmaking processes: the artist creates exactly one print instead of a series of prints. Monotypes are typically painterly in effect, they are made by applying printing ink to a flat sheet of non porous surface. Plexi glass is most common, the plate is covered with ink and the image is formed by manipulating and removing ink with a variety of tools, squeegees, sticks, rags, brushes, etc. Each inked plate will yield one monotype, but occasionally a "ghost image" can be made from the residual ink on the plate. Edgar Degas, used this process extensively in many of his pastel landscapes.
